FWIW, another penny’s worth…

Especially with smaller contests, the more people that show up, the more points can be scored by everyone. Each entrant can carve out their own space within the party and still be available for everyone else to work. There are many possible strategies depending on what floats your boat. Perhaps the biggest challenge is to figure out the exact strategy that works for you.

And don’t forget, a really unique thing about Radiosport is that competitors must cooperate in order to score points.

Thanks for your comments,

-Tom, K9BTQ

Ken and Paul,

You and I demonstrate the difference between a PARTY and a CONTEST. GOOD!

The organizers could split the scoring between those who want a PARTY and those who want to (or can) fight for points in a contest. Have (PDF) awards and scoring separated into Assisted and Independent! (Or WAR and PARTY!) Let us partyers chat etc. and the warriors stay out of our coffee shop!

When I go to a party, I do not talk for 5 minutes to each one there, but I like to talk to all I can and visit and make new friends. When I participated in a brawl I clubbed or hit everyone I could and knocked them out, as fast as I could. I was good at it - got awarded. -- Just FYI -- That war was called CHESS! At 72 years of age, I have stopped competing for the sake of competing. I honor you for your prowess.

I understand the portables/rovers may want to do both -- probably do -- and having a category for those who open a unoccupied county with thank you prizes, Harbor Freight meters, PL259 or other connectors or gas cards might not be too hard to do, and might encourage more activity.

Just my bandwidth stealing $0.02.

Doug K7EVI

I would love to work any or all of you! If you are spotted chances are slim, because I have not yet figured out how to pull them out!
However, if you are not spotted, chances are very much thinner, because when I learn, you will not be there!
If the rules are changed to encourage spotting, your PARTY will be that much more fun for the participant who is at the PARTY for FUN! It is called a QSO Party, is it not? Salmon Run has several round tables on various frequencies (bands) where rare counties (and rovers) stop in regularly to give many stations a chance to work them. Mobile stations break the round table and may work 50 stations in one sitting. Very often there are 5 to 10 of the4 rare counties on at one time - and if they QSY, they leave a frequency they plans to go to - and times they plan to be somewhere else. AND this then becomes a defacto spotting net. LETS HAVE A PARTY!

:-)

May I say that it encourages me to see so much activity for the WIQP, and
it's still 5 weeks away! Love the discussion! I promise I'll submit my logs
this time. : )

I read the mail with great interest and see all the various ways of
giving your location/ frequency etc., via spotting networks, phone GPS.
APRS etc., etc. Why don't you just call someone on the phone in each
county and call it a day? What happened to going mobile and work the
stations in various counties states that you can _hear_ and call CQ
and answer those that find you??? That is the way it was for years. One
had to use their own _operating skills_ to get an honest score. How
about one half the scores when using any "assisted" contacts.....My
opinion... Ken N9KS...

Ken, very well said.
My .02 cents worth.

WIQP,

Aside from the spotting issue, I noticed the MN QSO folks have a nice page
listing the mobiles/rovers planned routes. A couple have projected
schedules. I know that is not spotting and APRS, but maybe that
information may affect route choices. For a rover rookie such as myself, I
have great flexibility on where I go, being interested in activating
counties more than killing the score.

I was planning on doing some of the west central WI counties (Wood,
Clark...) but could easily divert to the south west or south central. Heck
based on last years results, Ozaukee was a tough get.

My only limitation is to have a starting point 2-3 hours away from
Milwaukee. That puts me on the road at 8:00 or 9:00 and lets me wind my
way back home as the contest progresses. So, no far north counties for
me. Not this year at least.
