[WIQPmail] Fixed and Mobile should have separate awards

Scott and I, among otherS, have discussed this very issue over time and I am 100 percent in agreement that it’s time to address it as well. With time now on our side, things most definitely have the opportunity to change over the course of the next year. I am in agreement that separating mobile vs fixed SO is a top priority however there are other added plaques that most definitely could encourage participation and would reflect well on the QSO party itself. I am glad to hear to club is on board with addressing the issue and making it happen.

Scott, myself and others are on board to make this happen and I also offer my assistance with making it happen for 2014. Be it sponsors, plaque ideas or whatever, I am willing to throw my name out there as someone willing to assist with getting this done.

Thanks to everyone for the QSO’s a few weeks ago, another great WIQP in the books! Was a lot of fun! Thanks also to Tom and the rest of the gang for all their work making it happen!

Hi Tom. Indeed, time is on our side now, with the recent contest behind us, and plenty of time to consider changes before any notices about the 2014 running need to be published, etc.

I understand that the cost of plaques in general are a lot more expensive than most people realize. Are you willing to share what the current plaque is costing WARAC? Do you have a picture you could post somewhere as to what it looks like? I have a few plaques from the "old days", but it may be different now.

Funny you mentioned "edible awards"... a few old timers might remember that, back in the early-mid 90s, to drum up support for WiQP, I offered to send the top scoring out of state entry a "cheese award", one of those cheddar cheese things made to be in the shape of Wisconsin, and promoted this through the CQ Contest mailing list. It was a lot of fun and definitely did a few new faces to the contest.

California's QSO Party is known for its "wine" awards (top 20 CA and top 20 Non-CA entries), as is the MnQP for their "Wild Rice" awards (top 20 non-MN entries). I am sure other states do something similar. I think it would be a great idea for WiQP to consider something similar.

Sponsors are key. Ham businesses, clubs, and individuals are all likely to want to help.

Let the discussion begin. :-)

Hello -

The WIQP committee is aware of the need to look at the plaque offerings but, with Lynn's resignation and the need for others to pick up the reins, we decided not to complicate matters by making changes. But, after the 2013 log jam clears, we want to look at a number of aspects of WIQP, and plaques is one of them. Also, we don't want to approach the plaque issue willy-nilly, but rather to think it through and make one set of changes. So, Scott, thank you for raising the question here so that we can get more input.

Clearly, the SO Fixed vs Mobile is the most mentioned area, but there are probably others. How about the other categories? Or for VHF activity? Tech? Rookie? How about edible awards?

Back in January, there was an interesting discussion of plaques on the QSO Party Group - an encapsulated version is at: http://www.warac.org/wqp/2013/plaqueinfo.doc. Check it out.

And, yes, sponsorship needs to be part of the program.

I agree with Scott. Separate mobiles from fixed.

Hello all!

I have to say that I have never seen a state QSO party that pit Mobile stations and Fixed stations (with completely different rules) against each other for a single award (Single Op). I know I am not the only fixed station that has shy'd away from operating WiQP due to this issue. Fixed stations should not be competing against Mobile stations, when the QSO rules and point bonuses are different.

I hope that this can be rectified. If the problem is the cost of a second plaque, I have already talked with a number of ham businesses and clubs in Wisconsin that would entertain sponsoring a new plaque, so that both Top Fixed and Top Mobile can have separate plaques.

What would it take to make this change? How can I help?

If you feel strongly for or against this type of change, I am guessing now is the time to chime in.

not sure if awards are different this year or not. in past highest overall single op score (fixed or mobile) got the plaque. i won it once in 2009 mobile.

in my opinion a fixed low power station has a hard time competing against a multi county mobile station and that may be keep some fixed guys from entering the contest.

perhaps a plaque for highest single op mobile and highest single op fixed?

starts getting expensive , but maybe multi ops (fixed and mobile) should get something too? maybe get plaque sponsors as Minnesota does?

one other change i'd make is defining a mobile as "capable of operation while mobile"

Mobile has gotten and award for only Mobile operation.

I have been mulling this over for many years. Giving Mobile stations and additional incentive.

That is If the highest calculated say Mobile Single Op score is higher than a Fixed Station highest score The Mobile station wins both awards.

The argument is that Fixed station is not Mobile. If a fixed station operates from another fixed location other than the fixed stations home location how should this be classified? Portable or Mobile? Neither one really is no longer recognized by the ARRL except Maritime and DX operations ever since the re-designations and definition by the FCC of the use of "/".

Referance: FCC Part 97.119 Station identification and

97.11 Stations aboard ships or aircraft.

So it is difficult to come up with terms to use other than Fixed or Mobile.

Not sure if I cleared this up.
