My two cents worth on the hours of WIQP.  This is my favorite contest, not just because it's my home state.  I think the timing is just right.  State QSO parties that last 12 hours, 24, 36 etc require a massive time commitment in order to score anything respectable.  The level of activity in such contests is a lot lower at any particular time in all but the largest states.  The seven-hour window compresses activity and allows everyone a chance to get a good score.  The big national and international contests can run longer and maintain a high level of activity at all times.  I think WIQP is just right and allows an old guy like me to get a competitive score without killing my back in a chair for 12 hours or more.
